Construction is part of the Career and Technology Program. The focus of Middle/Junior High CTS programs is exploration and development of life skills. Middle/Junior High Schools CTS programs are designed with a focus on personal skills for daily living and career exploration.
General Course Overview
1) Shop Safety
– identify and demonstrate general shop safe practices
– identify potential hazards and develop strategies to prevent the hazards
– describe and demonstrate safe practices for the handling and storage of materials and tools
2) Basic Tools and Materials
– identify and describe the safe use of basic hand tools
– demonstrate the safe use of basic hand tools
– identify and describe the safe use of power tools
– identify and compare the properties of common materials used in construction activities
– apply construction processes and skills to produce a product
3) Solid Stock Construction
– construct a wooden product, using basic techniques
– demonstrate basic competencies
– correct choice of tools
– follow general shop safety rules
– follow safety guidelines for each tool used
– apply basic drawing and transfer skills to prepare a pattern or
template
4) Sketch, Design, and Plan a Construction Project
– manually sketch, and draw ; natural and manufactured three dimensional forms
– use manual sketching, and drawing materials and tools effectively
– select, organize and design projects
– plan the process for the completion of projects
– evaluate options for materials and processes used in the construction of projects
