2013 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 83,000 times in 2013. If it were an exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it would take about 4 days for that many people to see it.

Mega Penny Project: What makes a good charity?

The Grade 6 Students at David Thompson are trying to find out how to evaluate a charity. They are trying to find out what questions they should ask to help them evaluate a charity.
HOW WOULD YOU CHOOSE A CHARITY?
Does it support a cause that you are interested in?
How do they spend the money they raise?
How does it use the money it collects to help people?
What part of the money that they collect do they spend on helping the people in need?
How can you find out what results the charity achieves?
Does the charity make effective use of volunteers rather than paying for workers?
How does the charity make an impact on the community?
How do you know it is a real charity and not a scam?
How does the charity improve the future?
How does the charity ensure accountability?
The charity works for a good cause.
The people in charity care for people or animals.
The charity makes sure the money they raise helps the people in need and not the profits of big companies.
The charity does not spend too much money to collect more money.

Mega Penny Project: How do we get people to donate?

What do we have to do to get people to bring us their pennies?

– convince them it is a good idea, for a great cause, great goal

– share with people what we are doing

– GUILT – people need the penny more than you!

– get people to care

– feel good – be a hero – your contribution will make a difference

– belonging – be part of something big – make something happen

– pity – feel bad for the unfortunate

HOW DO WE SHARE OUR MESSAGE AND GOAL?

posters – wanted…

go to other classrooms and make presentations

DTS news broadcast

-Post it on the web – D2L – twitter – blog

– collection boxes around the school

– school newsletter – school webpage

– P.A. broadcasts at the end of the day

– brochures – information table at lunch

– contact the media and see if they will help us

… and these are just some of the grade 6 ideas…

Mega Penny Project: Charity

How do we choose a charity?
What questions do we have to ask?
How do we know if the charity will use our money to make a difference?
We want to pick a charity that makes a difference. We want to pick a charity that make results happen with our donation.
What Research can we do?
How do we decide on a charity?

– survey, presentations, campaign, vote (Does this sound like Democracy?)

– Lottery, competition, (winning class gets to decide.) Mr. Bromhead chooses? (not so democratic?)

– sell ballots and people vote

– donations boxes for different charities and the charity that gets the most pennies wins all the money..

– classes present their favorite charity then all DTS students get to vote

Mega Penny Project: Ques-cussion

To get started we had the students generate some questions after we introduced the idea of collecting a MILLION PENNIES!

Here are some examples of our Fertile Questions:

1) Why are we collecting a Million Pennies?

2) Why is a million pennies not as large as it sounds?

3) What does a million really mean?

4) How can we use a million pennies to impact the lives of people?

5) How can we use the money we collect to make a difference?

6) Why should we work to make a difference in our community?

7) What are some things that we can do with the money we collect to impact the world?

8) How can we make a difference?

9) How can we be sure that the charity we choose will make good use of our money?

10) Why do we need charities?

These questions will be used to get us started on our Mega Penny Project.

Mega Penny Project: Teacher Comments

Teacher’s Ideas:
The Mega Penny Project is our attempt to engage the students in developing an understanding and appreciation of Democracy. We will explore how democratic principles and ideals are reflected in the students efforts to participate in the process of choosing a charity to donate the money we collect to. Hopefully we will instill in the students the belief that participation in the democratic process by citizens can effect change in their communities.

We will use the project to engage the students in activities in Math, Science, Social and Language Arts.

If you have any questions or comments please forward them to me.

Thanks, B. Roberts

Mega Penny Project: Student Letter

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The grade 6 classes have come together to raise 1 million pennies, that’s $10,000! The million pennies will be donated to make a difference in society and individual lives. The grade 6’s are working to figure out the best charity possible to give the money to.

We are working on the project in all of our core classes. So far we have worked on using large numbers and what mathematical problems we might have. As well we have looked at what the many different types of charities there are and how we should decide which one to give the money we raise to. We also are working on how to get students involved.

We would love your support in this project, the more the better.

Thank You,

Jayla and Katherine

On behalf of the Grade 6 students of David Thompson School

Teaching can lead to learning.

We have been doing this thing, PUBLIC EDUCATION, for a long time now. Well at least a hundred years. Now we have technology but it is much the same as 100 years ago. Thirty kids in a room with one adult.

Now it is time to ask the question; Are we ready to do something different rather than just doing the same thing differently? We have students write stories on a piece of paper, and then write stories with word-processing tools. But we can use technology to have students write stories, get feedback form their readers and then publish them for a larger audience.

Are we ready?
